How to Convert a BIN File to PDF (Easy Fix)
Got a .bin file right now?
Open it free in your browser. See the real file type, hex, text and preview in seconds. Nothing is uploaded.
Open your BIN fileSomeone sends you an invoice, a contract or a form. It should be a PDF. Instead you get a file like ATT00001.bin or document.bin. Adobe Reader will not touch it, and your phone shows a blank icon.
You want to convert BIN to PDF. In most cases, there is nothing to convert. The file is a PDF already, with the wrong name. This guide shows you how to confirm that, fix it in seconds and handle the rare cases where something else is going on.
Why a PDF becomes a .bin file
When a file travels by email or download, a label goes with it that says what type it is. If that label is missing or vague, the receiving app plays it safe and saves the file as .bin.
This happens most often with:
- Email from older or misconfigured mail servers. They send attachments with a generic label.
- Forwarded emails. Some mail apps lose the original name when forwarding between different systems.
- Web portals. Banking, school and government sites sometimes serve PDFs without a proper type.
- Mobile browsers. Android and iPhone save unknown downloads as .bin.
The PDF inside is usually perfectly fine.
Step 1: Confirm it is a PDF
Every PDF starts with the same five characters: %PDF- followed by a version number, like %PDF-1.7. Most also end with %%EOF.
The easiest way to check is our free BIN file opener.
- Open the tool in any browser.
- Drop your .bin file in or tap “Choose file”. It is read on your device, not uploaded.
- Look at the type. If it says “PDF document”, you are set.
You can also see the start of the file under “First bytes”. A PDF shows 25 50 44 46, which is the hex for %PDF.
Step 2: Preview the document
Click the Preview tab. Your browser shows the PDF pages right there. Scroll through to make sure it is the document you expected and that nothing looks broken.
This step matters for privacy too. Since the tool never uploads the file, you can preview a bank statement or a signed contract without sharing it with anyone.
Step 3: Save it as a PDF
Open the “Convert & save” tab and click “Download .pdf”. The tool saves the same bytes with the correct extension. Open the new file in any PDF reader.
Prefer to rename it yourself? Here is how:
- Windows: turn on file name extensions in File Explorer under View, then Show. Right-click the file, choose Rename and change .bin to .pdf.
- Mac: select the file in Finder, press Return, change the ending to .pdf and confirm.
- Android: long-press the file in Files, choose Rename and change the ending. See BIN files on Android.
- iPhone and iPad: tap and hold the file in the Files app, tap Rename and change the ending. See BIN files on iPhone.
When the BIN is not a PDF
Sometimes the tool shows a different type. Here is what each one means.
ZIP archive
Word, Excel and PowerPoint files are ZIP archives on the inside. If the email said “invoice” and the tool says ZIP, try saving it as .docx or .xlsx. It will likely open in Word, Excel, Google Docs or Pages. To turn it into a PDF, open it and use File, then “Save as PDF” or “Export to PDF”.
JPEG or PNG image
The sender may have scanned the document as a photo. Save it as .jpg or .png. To make a PDF, open the image and print it to PDF. On Windows, choose “Microsoft Print to PDF” as the printer. On Mac, click the PDF button in the print dialog. Our BIN to JPG guide covers images in detail.
Plain text
Open the Preview tab and read it. If you see words like “error”, “expired” or “access denied”, the download failed. Go back to the website, sign in and download again. If it is real text, save it as .txt.
Unknown binary data
The file may be in a format used only by one program, like a winmail.dat style package or an encrypted document. Check the Text strings tab for a program name. You might need to ask the sender to resend the file as a plain PDF.
What if the PDF is password protected?
Some bank statements and payslips are locked with a password. After you save the file as .pdf, your PDF reader will ask for it. The password usually comes in a separate message or follows a pattern like your date of birth. Our tool cannot unlock PDFs, and you should be wary of any site that offers to.
What if the PDF opens but looks broken?
Some pages are blank
The download may have stopped early. Compare the file size with what you expected. A full statement might be a few hundred kilobytes. A few kilobytes is suspicious. Download it again.
The reader says “file is damaged”
Check whether the file ends with %%EOF in the hex view. Use “Go to offset” and jump near the end. If the end is missing, the file is incomplete. Ask for it again.
The text looks scrambled
This is usually a font problem in the reader, not a file problem. Try opening it in a different PDF reader or in your web browser.
How to stop getting .bin PDFs
- Open attachments inside your email app, not through a web mail page in the browser.
- Ask the sender to attach the file directly instead of forwarding a forward.
- If a company portal always does this, tell their support team. It is a server setting they can fix.
- Keep your email app and browser up to date.
We cover this more in why email attachments arrive as .bin.
Is it safe to open a .bin attachment?
Checking it with our tool is safe. The tool reads the file but never runs it, and nothing is uploaded.
Be careful about what it turns out to be. Fake invoices are a common scam. If our tool says “Windows executable” for a file that claims to be a PDF, it is almost certainly malware. Do not rename it. Delete the email and warn the sender if you know them.
A real PDF can also carry risks, such as links to fake login pages. Treat any unexpected invoice with care, even after it opens.
A quick example
Usman’s accountant emails him a tax summary. On his Windows laptop, Outlook on the web shows ATT00002.bin. He downloads it and drops it into the BIN file opener. The type says “PDF document” and the first bytes are 25 50 44 46. The Preview tab shows his tax summary. He clicks “Download .pdf”, opens the file and prints it. The whole fix took one minute.
Can I convert other files to PDF here?
Our tool is built for identifying and saving binary files, not for turning Word or image files into PDFs. For that, use the “Save as PDF” or “Print to PDF” options built into Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. They are free and keep your data on your device.
Quick checklist for .bin PDFs
- Check the size. Real documents are usually more than a few kilobytes.
- Confirm the type says “PDF document”.
- Preview the pages before saving.
- Save with the .pdf extension.
- Keep the original until the new file opens correctly.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my PDF called ATT00001.bin?
Some email systems rename attachments they cannot label. The number just counts the attachments in the message. The file inside is usually fine.
Can I open a .bin PDF on my phone?
Yes. Open our online BIN file opener in Chrome or Safari, pick the file, check the preview and save it as .pdf.
Does renaming change the PDF?
No. Renaming only changes the label. Every byte stays the same, including any signatures or form fields.
What if I see %PDF in the middle of the file, not at the start?
The PDF may be wrapped inside another format, like an email package. Some tools can extract it, but the easiest fix is to ask the sender for the plain PDF.
Can I edit the PDF after fixing it?
Yes. Once it has a .pdf extension, it works like any PDF. Fill forms, sign it or add notes in your usual reader.
Conclusion
A PDF saved as .bin is one of the easiest file problems to fix. Check the type in our free BIN file viewer, preview the pages and save it as .pdf. If it turns out to be a Word file or an image, save it with that extension and print it to PDF. And if it turns out to be a program, delete it. For video files with the same problem, see BIN to MP4.
