How to Convert BIN to JPG or PNG
Got a .bin file right now?
Open it free in your browser. See the real file type, hex, text and preview in seconds. Nothing is uploaded.
Open your BIN fileA photo arrives as image.bin. A screenshot shows up as file.bin in your downloads. Your gallery ignores it and your photo app will not open it. You want to convert BIN to JPG or PNG so you can see the picture.
Good news. Most of the time, the picture is already a JPG or PNG. Only the name is wrong. This guide shows how to check, how to fix it in seconds and what to do when the image is in a less common format.
Why images get saved as .bin
When you download or receive a file, a type label travels with it. If the label is missing, your device does not know it is a picture and saves it as .bin. Common causes:
- Saving images from some websites and web apps.
- Email attachments from older mail systems.
- Files sent through certain chat or file transfer services.
- Images inside app data or caches that were never meant to have a name.
The image data itself is usually untouched.
How to tell what kind of image you have
Image formats start with a clear signature. Here are the common ones:
- JPEG: starts with FF D8 FF. Most photos use this.
- PNG: starts with 89 50 4E 47, which includes the letters PNG. Screenshots and graphics often use this.
- GIF: starts with the letters GIF8. Used for simple animations.
- WebP: starts with RIFF and has WEBP a few bytes later. Many websites use it.
- BMP: starts with the letters BM. An older, uncompressed format.
- HEIC: iPhone photos. It has “ftyp” at byte 4, followed by a brand like heic or mif1.
Our free BIN file opener checks these for you. Drop the file in and it tells you the type in plain words. The file stays on your device.
Step-by-step: turn a .bin into a viewable image
- Open the BIN file opener in any browser.
- Drag in the .bin file or tap “Choose file”.
- Check the type. You should see “JPEG image”, “PNG image”, “GIF image”, “WebP image” or “BMP image”.
- Click the Preview tab to see the picture.
- Go to “Convert & save” and click the download button. The image saves with the right extension.
- Open it in your normal photo app. On phones, it now appears in your gallery or can be saved to Photos.
That is all it takes for most files. The image is the same quality as before, because no data changed.
Renaming the file yourself
If you already know it is a JPG, you can just rename it.
- Windows: in File Explorer, open View, then Show, and tick “File name extensions”. Right-click the file, choose Rename and change .bin to .jpg.
- Mac: click the file in Finder, press Return, change .bin to .jpg and click “Use .jpg”.
- Android: long-press the file in your file manager and choose Rename. See BIN files on Android.
- iPhone: tap and hold in the Files app and choose Rename. See BIN files on iPhone.
Use the extension that matches the real type. A PNG renamed to .jpg usually still opens, because most apps check the signature. But it is cleaner to use the right one.
Converting PNG, WebP or HEIC to JPG
Sometimes you need a JPG specifically, maybe for a form upload that only accepts JPG. First save the image with its real extension. Then convert it.
On Windows
Open the image in Paint. Click File, then Save as, and choose JPEG picture. Paint handles PNG, BMP and GIF. For WebP and HEIC, Windows may need the free extensions from the Microsoft Store.
On Mac
Open the image in Preview. Click File, then Export, and pick JPEG in the Format menu. Preview handles PNG, HEIC, WebP and more.
On iPhone
Save the image to Photos. When you share it to most apps or email, iOS converts HEIC to JPG automatically. You can also change Settings, then Camera, then Formats to “Most Compatible” so new photos are saved as JPG.
On Android
Many gallery apps have an “Edit” then “Save as copy” option that saves a JPG. You can also use any free image converter app from the Play Store.
When the tool says MP4 / MOV for a photo
This one surprises people. iPhone HEIC photos use the same container family as MP4 and MOV videos. Both have “ftyp” at byte 4. So a basic check can label a HEIC photo as “MP4 / MOV”.
To tell them apart, open the hex view and look at bytes 8 to 11 in the ASCII column. If you see heic, heix or mif1, it is a photo. Save it as .heic. If you see isom, mp42 or qt, it is a video. See BIN to MP4 for videos.
When the image is inside a bigger file
Some BIN files hold images inside them, like app data packs, game files or firmware with a boot logo. The tool will not call these “image” because the file as a whole is something else.
You can still spot them. Use the hex search and type FF D8 FF in hex mode. Each hit is the possible start of a JPEG. Photo recovery and file carving tools can pull these images out automatically. Our BIN file extractor guide explains the general idea.
Troubleshooting
The preview shows only half the image
The file is incomplete. The top part loaded, but the download or transfer stopped. JPEG files should end with FF D9. Jump near the end in the hex view to check. If the ending is missing, get the file again.
The preview is blank
The format may not be supported by your browser, such as HEIC in some browsers. Save it with the right extension and open it in a native photo app instead.
The tool says “Unknown binary data”
The file is not a standard image. It may be a camera’s raw format, a design file or a thumbnail cache. Check the Text strings tab for a brand or program name. Camera raw files usually need the maker’s software or a raw editor.
The tool says “Plain text”
Preview it. You might see HTML or an error message. That means the download failed and you saved a web page instead of an image.
Is it safe?
Yes. Our tool reads the file in your browser and never runs it. Photos stay private because nothing is uploaded. If the type comes back as a program, like “Windows executable”, do not rename it. Delete it.
A quick example
Zara saves a product photo from a supplier’s site on her laptop. It downloads as photo.bin. She drops it into the BIN file opener. It says “WebP image” and the preview shows the product. Her shop platform wants JPG, so she saves it as .webp, opens it in Preview on her Mac and exports a JPG. Ten seconds of work.
JPG vs PNG vs WebP: which should you keep?
Once your image opens, you may wonder which format to keep. Here is a simple rule of thumb.
- JPG is best for photos. Files are small, and every device opens them. It loses a little detail each time you save.
- PNG is best for screenshots, logos and images with text. It keeps every pixel sharp and supports see-through backgrounds. Files are bigger.
- WebP is a modern web format. It gives small files with good quality, but some older apps cannot open it.
- HEIC is what iPhones use. It saves space, but Windows and many websites need it converted first.
If you are not sure, keep the image in the format it already has. Only convert when an app or website asks for something different. That way you never lose quality you did not need to lose.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert BIN to JPG online?
Yes, when the BIN is already a JPG. Our online BIN file opener saves it with the right extension without uploading it. For format changes like PNG to JPG, use Paint, Preview or your phone’s gallery.
Does renaming lose quality?
No. Renaming changes only the name. Converting between formats, like PNG to JPG, can lose a little quality because JPG compresses the image.
Why did my image save as .bin on Android?
The website did not tell your browser it was an image. See why downloaded files save as .bin.
Can I get images out of a game or firmware BIN?
Sometimes. Search for image signatures in the hex view. Carving tools can extract them, but some games compress or encrypt their art.
Conclusion
An image saved as .bin is almost always a normal JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP with the wrong name. Check it with our free BIN file viewer, preview it and save it with the right extension. If you need a JPG specifically, convert it with the free tools already on your computer or phone. For documents with the same problem, read BIN to PDF.
